More than 100 illnesses in outbreak tied to Mexican fruit

One death has been identified and more than 100 people in 16 states have been sickened by Salmonella linked to consumption of Maradol papayas imported from Mexico, the CDC reported Friday.
The agency said 109 people have become ill from eating the papayas.
Thirty-five people have been hospitalized, and the death related to the outbreak occurred in New York City.
Caribena brand Maradol papayas have been linked to the outbreak, and Maradol papayas from the Carica de Campeche papaya farm in Mexico have been identified by the FDA as the likely source of the Salmonella contaminated fruits.
The investigation is ongoing and CDC recommended that consumers avoid all Maradol papayas from Mexico and that restaurants not serve them and retailers not sell them “until we learn more.”
