Ordering off of a menu that displays calorie counts may encourage healthier choices, ScienceDaily reported.
According to a new meta-analysis of over 200 studies, people who ordered off of menus that displayed calorie counts chose options roughly 27 calories per meal less than when ordering off of menus without calorie displays. This effect was more significant for women, who ordered around 60 calories less per meal, and was even more pronounced among overweight women, who ordered 83 calories less per meal.
The study, to appear in the Journal of Retailing, also reported that restaurants who displayed counts on menus provided lower calorie options of around 15 calories per menu item.
